Equipment

Ingredients

  • cups water
  • 1 cups demerara sugar
  • 4-5 dried whole cloves
  • 1 dried cinnamon stick
  • 3-4 dried whole allspice
  • ½ nutmeg seed
  • 2-3 dried anise flowers

Instructions

  • Place the sugar and water into a saucepan over medium-high heat. Add all of the spices and allow the sugar to dissolve completely while stirring constantly.
  • Once the mixture is boiling, turn down the heat and simmer for 5-8 minutes. Remove from the heat and allow the mixture to steep for 30 minutes.
  • Strain the spices from the syrup and add to a sealable bottle or jar. Ensure the syrup has cooled completely before storing it in the fridge.

Notes

    • This syrup will last about 3-4 weeks when stored in the fridge in a sealed container. To prolong that shelf life, add a splash of vodka or Everclear, and the syrup will last an additional 1-2 weeks.
    • Allow the syrup to cool to room temperature before transferring it to a storage container. This allows the flavors to intensify, contributing to the syrup's overall richness.
    • Use a sealable container to store the syrup, like a jar with a lid or a sealable bottle.
