Why I Love This Recipe

I just love margaritas, like my Passionfruit Margarita and my Dragon Fruit Margarita, and I love finding new flavors that work well with the basic margarita ingredients to create new versions. One flavor that is perfect for tequila is hibiscus. Not only is the flavor of hibiscus flowers delicious, but the color that the dried flowers create is so vibrant just like in my Hibiscus Cupcakes and my Hibiscus Simple Syrup.

The hibiscus flowers make a beautiful and flavorful syrup, I also decided to make a dried hibiscus flower salt for the garnish. These two elements create the perfect final touch to this cocktail similar to my Calamansi Lime Margarita.

How to Get Hibiscus Flavor in a Margarita

Dried hibiscus flowers are edible and most commonly seen in tea. When the flowers are boiled in water, they create a deep red color and can be slightly sour.

Hibiscus tea is very common throughout the world and is often used as a medicinal tea. To get the flavor in a margarita, you will make a hibiscus simple syrup.

What Tequila To Use

I recommend using silver tequila for this drink. Although silver tequila can have a harsher taste, it's perfect for cocktails because it mixes with the rest of the ingredients to tone down the harshness.

I think good gold tequila is usually expensive and is best reserved for sipping. You can find 100% agave silver tequila at a decent price. I used Olmeca Altos Plata Tequila which you can usually find for under $30. But, as with all homemade cocktails, you can use any tequila you like!

How to Make Hibiscus Margaritas

  1. Prepare a cocktail glass by dipping the edge in lime juice and then in hibiscus salt or margarita salt to coat the rim. Add fresh ice and set aside.
  2. Add all of the liquids to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake until nice and cold, about 15-20 seconds.
  3. Carefully strain and pour the cocktail into the prepared glass. Garnish with a dried hibiscus flower, fresh mint, or lime wedge, and enjoy. Cheers!

How to Make Hibiscus Syrup

Place water and sugar in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat and stir to dissolve the sugar.

Add hibiscus flowers, cloves, and cinnamon stick to the pan, and bring to a boil. Allow the mixture to boil for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, and then remove it from the heat.

Allow the mixture to cool and steep for at least 1 hour. once cool, strain the solids from the liquid and discard the solids. Place the liquid in a sealable bottle or jar.

Hot to Make Hibiscus Margarita Salt

To make hibiscus salt: place 2 tablespoon dried hibiscus leaves in a coffee/nut grinder or food processor and pulse a few times to create small pieces. Add the hibiscus to margarita salt and stir to combine.
