Key Ingredients for Chocolate Turkeys
- Strawberries - As you can see in the photo, strawberries are probably not in season during the holidays. The good news is, you are going to cover them in chocolate!
- Mini Marshmallows and Pretzel Sticks - These ingredients are how you get those cute legs.
- Melting Chocolate - I use almond bark, but you can also use chocolate chips or your melting chocolate of choice.

How To Make This Recipe
Step 1: Place the dark chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl or a glass measuring cup. Melt the chocolate in the microwave for one minute. Stir and melt again for another 30 seconds. Continue stirring and melting at 30-second intervals until smooth.
Step 2: Take a strawberry, 2 pretzel halves, and 2 marshmallows. Place a marshmallow at the end of each pretzel stick on the broken end. Dip the sides of the marshmallows into the chocolate and attach them to either side of the strawberry. Carefully place the strawberry on a silicone mat and continue the process with the remaining strawberries. Place in the freezer for 20 minutes.
Step 3: Warm up the chocolate again before dipping the strawberries. Re-heat in the microwave for 30 seconds and stir. Add the vegetable oil to the chocolate and stir to combine. This will thin out the consistency to make dipping the strawberries easier.
Step 4: Remove the prepared strawberries from the freezer. Take a candy stick and carefully stick it into the top of a strawberry. Dip the entire strawberry into the chocolate just until the green stem. Allow the chocolate to drip off and then place the strawberry back on the mat. Carefully remove the stick and repeat with the rest of the strawberries.
Step 5: Allow the strawberries to set by placing the pan in the fridge for 10-15 minutes. While the strawberries are setting, melt the white chocolate in another microwave-safe bowl. This will probably only take two 30-second intervals.
Step 6: Remove the pan from the fridge. Take each turkey and dip the ends of the legs in the white chocolate to create a bone look. Allow the turkeys to fully set before serving.
Expert Tips For This Recipe
- Lightly tap the spoon on the side of the bowl after dipping each turkey in the candy coating to get off the excess chocolate. Don't tap too hard or the legs will fall off.
- Use a silicone mat or parchment paper when allowing the chocolate to set, This makes it easier to remove the turkeys when they are ready to go.
- Before serving, let the turkeys sit at room temperature for a bit to ensure the chocolate softens a little.
- The added vegetable oil to the chocolate before dipping helps thin out the consistency just enough to allow the excess chocolate to drip off.
- Ensure all of your equipment is free of any moisture before melting the chocolate. Any added water will make the chocolate seize and it will not be able to be used.
Recipe FAQS
Any leftover turkeys can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for 1-2 days.
I usually microwave the chocolate to melt it because it's fast and easy. You can also use a double boiler, just make sure no water or steam gets in the chocolate or it will seize.
You can use whole, frozen strawberries that have been thawed and dried completely. Any water left on the berries will make the chocolate coating seize.
Everything needs to be completely dry with no moisture on them at all. If your chocolate starts to seize you can try to re-heat it, however, you usually need to start over with new chocolate.
You can make these turkeys up to 24 hours in advance and store them in the fridge until they are ready to be served.

- Remove the prepared strawberries from the freezer. Take a candy stick and carefully stick it into the top of a strawberry. Dip the entire strawberry into the chocolate just until the green stem. Allow the chocolate to drip off and then place the strawberry back on the mat. Carefully remove the stick and repeat with the rest of the strawberries.
- Allow the strawberries to set by placing the pan in the fridge for 10-15 minutes. While the strawberries are setting, melt the white chocolate in another microwave-safe bowl. This will probably only take two 30-second intervals.
