Why You'll Love This Recipe

You will love this Guava Margarita recipe because it brings the classic taste of a traditional margarita with a tropical fruit twist that makes a balanced, not to mention pretty, cocktail similar to my Passionfruit Margarita and my Dragon Fruit Margarita.

You can customize the ratios in this drink to your liking. You also have the option to make homemade guava puree or use a store-bought version, like in my Guava Passion Fruit Drink, Guava Mai Tai, and my Guava Daiquiri. Guava and tequila make a great match, and you will love this tropical margarita, which is on my list of 21 Flavored Margaritas!

Key Guava Margarita Ingredients

  • Guava Puree - Guava puree is easy to make from fresh guavas (see instructions below or in the recipe card). However, if you don't have fresh guava, you can use store-bought guava puree or pulp.
  • Tequila - You can use any tequila you prefer for this margarita. I like to use silver tequila for margaritas because of its crisp flavor.
  • Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice - Freshly squeezed citrus juice is always best in a cocktail to get the best flavor possible.

*See the recipe card for the complete list of ingredients and quantities.

How to Make This Recipe

  1. Place fresh ice into a margarita glass and set it aside.
  2. In the cocktail shaker, combine the tequila, orange liqueur, guava puree, lime juice, and agave syrup over fresh ice. Seal the shaker with its top and shake vigorously for about 10-12 seconds until well-chilled.
  3. Double-strain the mixture into the previously prepared glass. Garnish with a lime wedge or a guava slice and enjoy immediately.

Expert Tips for This Cocktail

  • Use Fresh Citrus Juice - Cocktails are always best when you use freshly squeezed citrus juice, especially in margaritas. Bottle juice usually has added ingredients that will significantly change the flavor of the drink.
  • Select Quality Tequila - Choose a high-quality tequila, preferably a silver or blanco variety. The clean and crisp flavors of good tequila will complement the fruity notes of the guava.
  • Rim the Glass with Salt - Use margarita salt to add a salty element to this cocktail and enhance the flavors and sweetness of the guava.
  • Experiment with Garnishes - Besides a lime wedge or guava slice, you can get creative with herbs like mint or rosemary or add a little creativity to the salt and add lime zest.
  • Shake Vigorously - Make sure you shake this cocktail vigorously before straining to achieve the right level of dilution and to ensure the margarita is nice and cold.
  • Serve in the Right Glassware - Use a margarita glass or a lowball glass with a wide rim to showcase your drink. Cocktail presentation enhances the overall drinking experience.

Recipe FAQs

What type of tequila is best for a guava margarita?

I recommend silver or blanco tequila for its clean and crisp flavor profile in margaritas, but you can use your preferred type.

Do I have to double-strain this cocktail?

It's a good idea to double-strain this cocktail because the guava puree is usually pretty thick, especially if you are using a homemade version.

Can I salt the rim?

Yes! Salting the rim of a margarita enhances the sweetness and adds even more balance to the cocktail. Moisten the rim of the glass with a lime wedge and then dip the top of the glass into a plate of salt.

Can I make a non-alcoholic version of guava margarita?

Yes, you can replace the tequila and orange liqueur with non-alcoholic alternatives. Increase the amount of guava juice and add a splash of sparkling water if desired.

Can I make this guava margarita blended?

To make this margarita blended, use a blender with ice-crushing capabilities to ensure a smooth and well-mixed guava margarita. You may need to play with the flavor ratios since the ice will change the flavor ratios slightly.

How do I garnish a guava margarita?

Garnish with a slice of lime or a wedge on the rim of the glass. You can also add a guava slice for an extra touch.

Equipment

  • 1 cocktail shaker
  • 1 measuring jigger
  • 1 cocktail strainer

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces blanco tequila
  • ½ ounce orange liqueur (I used Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao)
  • 2 ounces guava pulp or puree
  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • ½ ounce agave syrup (can substitute with simple syrup)
  • lime wedge or guava slice (optional garnish)

Instructions

  • Fill the glass with fresh ice and set it aside.
  • Add fresh ice to the cocktail shaker along with the tequila, orange liqueur, guava puree, lime juice, and agave syrup. Place the top on the shaker and shake for 10-12 seconds until nice and cold.
  • Double strain into the prepared glass. Garnish with a lime wedge or guava slice if desired and enjoy. Cheers!

Notes

    • Use Fresh Citus Juice - Cocktails are always best when you use freshly squeezed citrus juice, especially in margaritas.

    • How to Make Guava Puree - Cut 3-4 guavas into about 1" pieces. Add them to a medium saucepot with ½ cup water over medium-high heat. Stir occasionally and mash the guava as it warms up. Remove the pan from the heat once the mixture is bubbling and the guava has mostly broken apart. Add the guava mixture to a food processor or blender and blend until smooth.
