I've always loved hummus and for a long time thought that it was difficult to make. Once I found out you can make this Mediterranean Hummus recipe with only a handful of ingredients, I was so excited to give it a try!
According to Wikipedia, hummus is a dip, spread, or savory dish made from cooked, mashed chickpeas blended with tahini, lemon juice, and garlic. Standard garnishes include olive oil, a few whole chickpeas, parsley, and paprika.
Ingredients Needed to Make This Recipe
Canned Garbanzo Beans - (also known as chickpeas) are a good source of plant-based protein and dietary fiber. Garbanzo beans have a nutty flavor and creamy texture, making them a popular choice for hummus.
Fresh Garlic - fresh garlic is best, but you can use the jarred stuff in a pinch. It has a pungent aroma and distinctive flavor.
Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice: - lemon juice adds a refreshing citrusy tang to the hummus. Make sure you use fresh lemon juice, the bottled stuff has extra additives that won't give you the same fresh flavor.
Tahini Sauce - Tahini is a paste made from ground sesame seeds and is a key ingredient in hummus. It provides a rich, creamy texture and adds a nutty flavor to the hummus.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil - extra virgin olive oil is a heart-healthy oil that adds a smooth and velvety consistency to the hummus.
Paprika - paprika is optional but adds a hint of smoke to hummus. Paprika is available in various types, such as sweet, smoked, or hot, allowing you to choose the level of spiciness desired. You can add the paprika while mixing the hummus or to the top for a great-looking garnish.
How to Make Easy Hummus at Home
Rinse and drain the garbanzo beans and place them in the bowl of a food processor. Add the lemon juice, garlic, olive oil, and tahini and pulse, and puree until smooth.
Add salt and pepper and continue to process. Taste for seasoning and more of anything that is needed.
For a thinner, smoother hummus, add water or more tahini, a little at a time until you reach your desired consistency. Serve the hummus with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of paprika if desired.
How To Store Homemade Hummus
