How to Make Star-Shaped Rice Krispies
Prepare a 9x13 pan with non-stick spray. Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until fully melted in the butter. Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the rice cereal and 2 tablespoon sprinkles.
Pour into the prepared dish and press into the pan as much as you can. Cover the top with more sprinkles and press on the top again so the sprinkles stick. Place the pan in the fridge for 20 minutes to cool.

Remove the pan from the fridge and carefully remove the treats from the pan using your hands or a spatula onto a cutting board or counter. Use the cookie cutter to cut out the stars.
Expert Tips for This Recipe
- Use non-stick or butter to coat the pan so the treats don't stick.
- You can also spray your hands with non-stick spray or coat them with butter before pressing the treats into the pan so that they are nice and compact. This will also make cutting out the shapes much easier.
- Of course, the scrapes are edible so don't throw them away! You should definitely take a few bites while cutting out the stars...you know, to make sure they taste good!
- These treats will last in an air-tight container for 3-4 days.
What Size Cookie Cutter to Use
Really, you can use any cookie cutter you like or have. I used a 4" inch cookie cutter for these patriotic treats.
What Sprinkle to Use for This Recipe
The great thing about these treats is that you can use any sprinkle you want to decorate them. I used classic Jimmie-style sprinkles in red, white, and blue to stay on theme.
Recipe FAQs
Yes, you can make gluten-free Rice Krispie treats by using a gluten-free crispy rice cereal and ensuring that your marshmallows are also gluten-free.
Applying a light layer of cooking spray or butter on your hands will help prevent the sticky mixture from sticking to your hands while pressing it into the pan.
Yes, you can use regular-sized marshmallows. However, mini marshmallows melt more evenly and quickly, making them a preferred choice for this recipe.
Yes! While puffed rice cereal is the classic choice, you can use other crispy cereals like cornflakes or square graham cereal to create different flavors and textures.
Butter is a key ingredient in traditional Rice Krispie treats for both flavor and texture. However, if you're looking for a dairy-free option, you can try using vegan butter or coconut oil.
To make the treats softer, use less cereal than the recipe calls for. For chewier treats, use more marshmallows.
