What Whiskey or Bourbon to Use for this Cocktail
This cocktail can be made with whiskey or bourbon (see below for differences). A traditional Whiskey Sour calls for an 80-proof bourbon which will add the perfect flavor to the sweet and sour elements of the drink.
If you want to taste the alcohol a little more, try a 100-plus-proof whiskey. And if you want more of a punch from your whiskey, try a rye whiskey, which will give you an extra boost of flavor.
What's the Difference Between Bourbon and Whiskey?
Bourbon has to be made in America with at least 51% corn, aged in new charred oak barrels, and it has to hit certain ABV marks (no more than 160 proof and put into the barrels at 125 proof).
Some people say that Bourbon has to be made in Kentucky, which isn't true. Bourbon can be made in another state. To be called a "Kentucky Bourbon", it has to be both distilled and aged in Kentucky.
Whiskey is distilled from a fermented grain mash that could be comprised of corn, rye, barley, and/or wheat. It is then aged in oak barrels, but they do not have to be new or charred like bourbon. Whiskey cannot be distilled higher than 190 proof. Whiskey is made all over the world and there are several styles like Irish Whiskey and Scotch Whiskey.
